Yes, Abhinav Bindra is not the only one who’s brought a gold to India. In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Sunita Lamba won a gold at the games. Sunita is a fine art artist from Delhi, she won the gold medal for her sculpture. Sunita has sent her sculpture, ‘Spirit of Unity’, for the Olympic Fine Arts 2008, an exhibition put up by the organising committee at Beijing, and it was seleced, for display, from among 10,000 entries for the final 110.
The exhibition was inaugurated by the chairman of the International Olympic Committee on August 11and on the very same day they announced the gold medal for Sunita. She was also given an Olympic torch besides the certificate of winning the gold medal. Her gold medal will be presented to her after the 40-day exihibition gets over. The exhibition will run for a few months in different areas of China itself and after that it will move to countries across the world.
Sunita Lamba is very happy for the gold, but disappointed for being ignored by the authorities. She tried to contact authorities before flying to Beijing, just to inform that she was participating. But nobody responded to her. After winning the gold, she went ignored by the authorities. She finally contacted Delhi’s Chief Minister, Sheila Dixit last week. They met in the felicitation function of Olympic bronze medal winner in wrestling Sushil Kumar. Even here she wasn’t acknowledged. Father of Vijender Singh, Olympic bronze medalist at Olympics in the event of Boxing, congratulated Sunita and expressed his regret over people’s ignorance.
This shows that Indian govenment and it’s organizations ae like the media which blows up some issues like a Tsunami and neglects others such as the dam on river Kosi.
